Report ## Advancing Women's Cancer Care through Global Partnership
Abstract:
Cancer, the leading cause of death worldwide, poses a significant threat to public health. This report detls an initiative called Coalition-Building between the US and China on Women's Cancer Detection, Treatment Care launched by Milken Institute in collaboration with the US-China Business Council USCBC. The objective is to harness the power of non-profit sectors, governments, and private enterprises to mitigate barriers and improve patient outcomes for women facing cancer.
Executive Summary:
The United States and China, both leaders in global health policy, face common challenges related to cancers that disproportionately impact women. With four out of ten most prevalent cancers being those affecting women e.g., breast, cervical, the need for international collaboration is evident. This report synthesizes insights from a roundtable discussion held in Hong Kong by Milken Institute and USCBC, featuring representatives from key institutions and companies from both countries.
:
This project was conceptualized to identify opportunities for strategic cooperation between US and Chinese entities focusing on women's cancer detection methods, treatment innovations, and care delivery improvements. The roundtable, facilitated by Milken Institute and USCBC, engaged 40 delegates - experts in biomedical research, public health officials, government representatives, medical professionals from Hong Kong-based institutions, and senior executives of life science companies.
Key Findings:
Identification of Potential Areas for Collaboration: Experts identified several areas where US-China partnership could yield significant benefits:
a Data Sharing Analysis: Development of a collaborative framework to exchange data on cancer incidence, mortality rates, survival outcomes, genetic predispositions, and treatment effectiveness.
b Research on Early Detection: Joint efforts in developing and validating early detection tools for women's cancers through multi-center clinical trials.
c Innovative Treatment Strategies: Collaboration on the development of new therapies targeting specific biological pathways relevant to women's cancers.
d Patient Navigation Support Services: Sharing best practices from both countries in providing psychosocial support, telemedicine applications, and patient navigation programs for cancer patients.
e Educational Initiatives: Co-creation of trning modules on advanced surgical techniques, clinical trials management, and precision medicine approaches specific to women's cancers.
Recommations:
The roundtable recommed several steps for implementing this partnership:
a Establishing a Joint Working Group composed of representatives from the government, academia, industry, and non-profit sectors.
b Designing pilot projects focused on low-hanging fruit areas that could quickly demonstrate impact while laying groundwork for more complex initiatives.
c Setting up a dedicated fund or channel to facilitate financial investments in collaborative research programs.
Participants expressed interest in exting the coalition's scope beyond cancer care to include other health domns where China and the US share similar challenges, such as mental health disorders, chronic diseases management, and public health innovations.
s Call to Action:
This initiative ms at creating a dynamic exchange platform to leverage the strengths of both nations for the benefit of global healthcare. The roadmap outlined in this report serves as a foundation for initiating comprehensive discussions on cooperation in women's cancer care among policymakers, medical researchers, industry leaders, and non-profit organizations.
This project is designed with flexibility to accommodate evolving health landscape needs and incorporates feedback from participants during the roundtable discussion. Milken Institute and USCBC are committed to fostering this global partnership and look forward to its continuous growth in addressing women's health challenges across borders.
