Ta-Ya Lee joined the team at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center in February, offering integrative medicine consultations through the Under Armour Breast Health Innovation Center. As a licensed acupuncturist with an advanced degree from Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and extensive experience in patient-centered care combining Eastern and Western medical practices over 25 years, she brings a unique skill set to her work. Her most recent accomplishment includes completing an Integrative Oncology Fellowship at the University of Michigan.
What excites her about her job?
The Kimmel Cancer Center offers Ta-Ya a platform where she can combine all her experiences in integrative medicine and apply them to benefit cancer patients, building on her previous role as an oncology research nurse. Her journey into becoming an acupuncturist was ignited by the inspiring stories of her patients who were seeking non-pharmacological interventions during chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
How does she see her professional development?
Trning in Integrative Medicine has allowed Ta-Ya to grow professionally, offering unique individualized care based on the synergy between Eastern and Western medical practices. This includes a foundational year as part of the Bravewell Integrative Fellowship in 2008, where she learned new concepts dly that expanded her understanding of integrated medicine.
What challenges does she face?
While there is limited avlability for integrating integrative services such as acupuncture, massage therapy, music therapy, meditation, nutrition consultation, resilience trning, hypnosis, T Chi, Yoga, Qigong due to scarce resources and referrals. The Kimmel Cancer Center build referral hubs that can offer these therapies to enhance patient care.
