THESE INDIVIDUALS INSPIRE US WITH THEIR STRENGTH IN ADVERSITY AND THE POWER OF HOPE EVEN IN DARK TIMES, UNDERSTANDING THAT THEY ARE NOT JUST PASSIVE RECIPIENTS BUT ACTIVE OWNERS OF THEIR LIVES, TOUCHING THEIR COMMUNITIES WITH INSPIRATION.
BEACON OF STRENGTH AND HOPE: DEEPA MAURYA
Deepa Maurya, an IT professional diagnosed with stage one Lung Cancer in 2016, is a shining beacon of strength and hope. The disease progressed rapidly to stage four within months, spreading across her brn, bones, uterus, and shoulder prior history or smoking habits. She ured a myriad of treatments including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and surgery while battling side effects such as insomnia, hearing loss, and numbness in her left arm.
Despite multiple relapses, Deepa remned resilient and optimistic, choosing to continue working throughout her cancer journey. Her job not only provided financial stability but also a sense of normalcy and happiness amidst the challenges she faced. SCS's Return To Work RTW program further supported her transition back to work by building her confidence and equipping her with strategies to handle workplace stress.
Deepa's family, especially her husband Vinit and son Deepanshu, were her pillars of support, accompanying her through crucial doctor’s appointments while shouldering household chores and financial responsibilities. Beyond her personal struggles, she actively gave back to society by volunteering at Keat Hong Community Centre and holding leadership positions in cancer support groups, inspiring others with her resilience.
WINGS OF HOPE: WHAT GROWING UP AROUND CANCER IS LIKE - KENJI NG
Kenji Ng's life story serves as a testament to strength and hope born out of adversity. Growing up around the diagnosis of his father’s Nose Cancer at just eight months old, he was acutely aware of the impact cancer can have on families. His father's inability to work due to illness left his mother solely responsible for their financial needs.
Throughout this challenging period, SCS became a beacon of support for Kenji and his family, providing not only financial assistance but also emotional comfort through the presence of fellow cancer patients in their community. Despite the challenges, Kenji continued with his school life and pursued interests such as art therapy to find solace amidst the hardships.
Kenji's passion for giving back is evident through SCS’s Birthday Givebacks campgn, where he has rsed almost $20,000 so far, ming to reach a goal of $50,000 by 2024. He inspires other cancer survivors and supporters alike by sharing his journey at Relay For Life events.
MADAM ROKIYA: PORSCHE WITHOUT BRAKES
Madam Rokiya's battle with Cancer demonstrated the strength of resilience and love. She faced her diagnosis in 2021 with a fierce determination, continuing to lead dly routines while finding solace through art therapy. Her unwavering love for her family was evident as she cherished every moment with them, from her children aged 13-21.
Even during the darkest days of her illness, Madam Rokiya remned active in community volunteering before her health permitted further engagement. SCS Hospice Care Services provided crucial support to ensure her final days were spent comfortably at home surrounded by family and loved ones.
Madam Rokiya's legacy is a powerful reminder that even those nearing the of their journey can live life to its fullest, with strength emanating from love and community support. Her story challenges common misconceptions about terminal cancer patients in hospice care, highlighting their active roles in crafting their own narratives until the very .
