The national strategy to prevent, detect, and treat cancer prioritize early detection as a cornerstone in reducing mortality rates. The current landscape underscores the importance of identifying and treating cancers at their earliest stages for more effective management.
Current State:
While significant progress has been made with certn screening tests known to reduce mortality rates mammography for breast, HPVPap tests for cervical, colonoscopysigmoidoscopies for colorectal cancer, low-dose CT scans for lung, numerous eligible individuals do not receive these screenings. Disparities in screening and early detection rates exist across different populations, necessitating targeted interventions to improve access.
Innovation Landscape:
Leveraging new technologies that can detect tumor cells or biomarkers indicative of many cancers at their earliest stages has the potential to revolutionize cancer diagnosis. These advancements could particularly benefit cancers lacking effective screening methods, but ensuring they lead to a net reduction in mortality while minimizing overtreatment is crucial.
Strategies for Advancement:
Innovate New Detection Methods: Focus on developing novel approaches that enhance early detection capabilities, especially for cancers with limited screening options.
Imaging Improvements: Innovate imaging techniques that enable earlier identification of tumors before they manifest symptoms.
Precancerous Cell Elimination: Explore methods to identify and eliminate precancerous cells with minimal side effects.
Clinical Trials Expansion: Conduct large-scale trials to determine the benefits versus risks associated with new early detection tests.
Community Engagement Education: Collaborate closely with healthcare providers, researchers, and high-risk communities to enhance screening rates.
Understanding Barriers: Research factors that impede timely cancer treatment in underserved populations, such as financial burdens and navigation support needs.
Leveraging Advanced Technologies:
NCI-supported research is exploring the efficacy of different mammography techniques mammographic imaging screening trials for breast cancer detection. The institute works across agencies to study comprehensive aspects of multi-cancer detection tests.
Government Collaboration:
The Inside Knowledge About Gynecologic Cancer campgn by CDC targets misinformation and stigma that hinders cervical cancer screenings, as well as care for other gynecological cancers.
Health Resources and Services Administration HRSA awards the National Quality Leader – Cancer Screening badge to community health centers for providing access to lifesaving breast, cervical, and colorectal screening services.
The Department of Veterans Affrs leads PREMIUM study PREventing Liver Cancer Mortality through Imaging with Ultrasound vs. MRI, ding in determining the most effective liver cancer screening technique.
The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program offers screenings for low-income, uninsured women under CDC's initiative.
Collaborative Research Efforts:
NCI’s partnership with NIST has developed robust standards for early cancer detection via circulating tumor DNA, methylated DNA, extracellular vesicles, and liquid biopsy samples.
