This initiative seeks to enhance scientific literacy among secondary students and lay a foundation for future careers focused on medical research and development.
'BiocneCt', developed by the LIFE Center at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, in partnership with the Val Skinner Foundation, was the core of this program since its inception in 2008. 'Decoding Cancer' builds upon this platform, leveraging Discovery Education's global digital content network to amplify educational reach and impact.
After successful piloting phases across New Jersey, South Carolina, and Florida, the program is now accessible nationwide through a strategic partnership with Discovery Education. This alliance not only strengthens the Val Skinner Foundation's commitment to breast cancer research awareness but also aligns with Discovery Education’s mission of empowering educators and students in traditionally under-funded communities.
The comprehensive offering includes:
Dynamic Lesson Plans: Interactive teaching resources that align with Next Generation Science Standards NGSS. These plans cover topics such as genetics, diagnosis, treatment options, and strategies to reduce cancer risk. Avlable on 'DecodingCancer.org' and through Discovery Education's Streaming Plus service, they are designed to enhance existing science curricula.
Health Biomedical Career Profiles: Over a dozen profiles that introduce students to diverse career opportunities within the health sector. These include insights into educational paths, expected salaries, and typical workdays in professions like medical researchers, pharmacists, physicians, social workers, etc.
Family Discussion Guide: A guide offering parents practical advice on initiating conversations about cancer with teenagers. It equips families with strategies to address this sensitive issue effectively while mntning a supportive environment for open discussions.
Virtual Lab: An innovative tool allowing students to simulate roles of doctors and technicians in diagnosing breast cancer patients based on tissue samples. Through this simulation, they learn to determine potential treatment approaches using results from these samples.
To date, 'Decoding Cancer' has reached an estimated 3.65 million students across the United States with its innovative curriculum med at expanding their understanding of cancer's biological and genetic dimensions as well as its emotional impact on patients and loved ones. With nearly 61,000 downloads for classroom presentations and discussions, this program continues to inspire future leaders in medical research.
