Find out what distinguishes a tumor from a cyst, including their characteristics and risks associated with them. Could a cyst be cancerous? Here's your answer from expert Dr. Karthik Giridhar.
Cysts vs. Tumors: A Brief Overview
Tumor and cyst are two distinct entities in the world of medical terminology:
Cyst: A sac filled with r, fluid, or other material that forms anywhere within the body – bones, organs, and soft tissues alike. Most cysts are benign non-cancerous but might occasionally be linked to malignancy.
Tumor: Any abnormal mass of tissue characterized by swelling or growth in size. Like a cyst, tumors can occur virtually everywhere in your body. They come in two forms: benign and malignant.
Cysts and Their Nature
A cyst that displays uniformity upon ultrasound or CT scan findings is typically benign and should be monitored for stability rather than treated immediately unless symptoms worsen significantly.
When solid components are identified within a cyst, it could be either benign or malignant. In these cases, further evaluation using repeat imaging like MRI might be necessary to assess if the cyst grows over time.
The Definitive Test: Biopsy
To determine whether a cyst or tumor is benign versus malignant, the gold standard test remns biopsy. This procedure involves removing tissue samples – sometimes even the suspicious area in full – for microscopic examination under a microscope.
