The Center for Cancer Prevention, Early Detection, and Monitoring at City of Hope unites researchers from various disciplines across the institution in an effort to translate discoveries into practical solutions for cancer prevention and early detection. By merging mathematical, statistical analysis, and information technology with experimental research, epidemiological studies, and genomic sequencing data, Cristian Tomasetti, Ph.D., has provided groundbreaking evidence on how normal cellular mutations contribute significantly to the development of cancer.
The primary focus of this center is to develop innovative technologies for detecting and monitoring cancer at an early stage using minimally invasive blood tests or imaging. This could potentially identify cancers decades before traditional diagnostic methods can detect them. It comprises three mn branches: City of Hope's Division of Mathematics for Cancer Evolution and Early Detection, the TGen Center for Early Detection Technologies, and City of Hope's Clinical Research Branch for Early Detection.
Research Highlights:
Early Multicancer Detection: We are pioneering technologies that enable the early detection of multiple cancers through strghtforward blood tests or imaging techniques.
Monitoring for Recurrence: Our efforts m to identify the signs of cancer recurrence promptly after treatment, allowing for prompt intervention and improved patient outcomes.
Modeling Cancer Evolution: By developing mathematicalthat simulate tumor growth and evolution, we can predict potential pathways leading to malignancy and design targeted prevention strategies.
Cancer Etiology Research: We are advancing our understanding of the risk factors contributing to cancer development at both individual and population levels.
The Center's Contribution:
Historically, only a small fraction of research funding has been dedicated to cancer prevention. The shift towards early detection holds great promise for reducing mortality rates and transforming the approach to combatting cancer. Cristian Tomasetti's pioneering work is acknowledged globally for his insights into cancer etiology and tumor evolution dynamics.
Tomasetti leads efforts in developing new technologies, algorithms, and mathematicalthat facilitate earlier detection of cancers through noninvasive methods such as blood tests or imaging scans. This has the potential to significantly improve outcomes by detecting cancers at a much earlier stage than traditional diagnostic procedures.
Leadership:
Cristian Tomasetti, Ph.D., is the visionary director of City of Hope's Center for Cancer Prevention and Early Detection. As the head of the Division of Mathematics for Cancer Evolution and Early Detection in the Department of Computational and Quantitative Medicine at Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope, Dr. Tomasetti spearheads these groundbreaking initiatives.
