Standardization of Prechemotherapy Assessments for Improved Quality and Safety
The rising incidence of cancer in China-a global tr that also reflects within the country-has seen cancer become a leading cause of mortality, emphasizing the importance of quality care. Chemotherapy, as a primary treatment modality, is effective but can entl serious risks associated with adverse effects that profoundly impact patient outcomes and their quality of life.
The administration of chemotherapy can be accompanied by an array of potential side-effects including nausea and vomiting, fatigue, and kidney toxicity, thus posing significant threats to both physical and psychological wellbeing. Mismanagement of chemotherapeutic agents carries the risk of grave harm to patients' lives. Therefore, it is essential for safety reasons that a comprehensive assessment be conducted on cancer patients before chemotherapy administration. However, despite this recommation's validity, its implementation in Chinese hospitals has been lacking.
The JBI Center of Excellence in China, Nanfang Nursing Centre for Evidence-Based Practice, took the lead by launching an ambitious national, multi-site evidence implementation project.
The project addresses the critical void in standardized guidelines for nursing assessments related to chemotherapy patients and the significant discrepancies between knowledge and practice among clinical nurses. By embracing evidence-based practices, our m is to elevate the quality and safety standards of chemotherapy delivery for better patient outcomes, elucidated Dr Yanni Wu from Nanfang Nursing Centre for Evidence-Based Practice.
The project sparked a cultural change towards prioritizing evidence-based nursing care. Baseline audits and subsequent follow-up audits revealed an increased level of enthusiasm among participating nurses, indicating their growing confidence in implementing such practices based on evidence.
The implementation was guided by the JBI approach to evidence implementation. Each participating hospital utilized the JBI PACES tool Patient Assessment Checklist for Evidenced-Based Solutions and GRiP framework Getting Research into Practice. The unified tools and methodologies employed offered a replicable model that could be scaled up for future evidence implementation projects, both domestically in China and internationally.
The impact of this project was significant as it led to the standardization of pre-chemotherapy assessment procedures across 70 hospitals in 32 cities. This scalability showcases its potential for broader application towards addressing healthcare challenges elsewhere.
A study detling this project's findings titled Pre-treatment assessment of chemotherapy for cancer patients: a multi-site evidence implementation project of 74 hospitals in China, provides valuable insight into the implementation process and serves as a guide for other evidence-based practitioners looking to conduct large-scale, multi-site evidence implementation projects.
